5 Things to Never Ignore When Comparing Cabin Companies in NZ

Choosing a cabin company is a bigger decision than it might appear. You're not just buying a product you're entering a relationship with a business that will be responsible for one of the more significant purchases your family makes. Here's what to look at when you're comparing your options.

1. What the Cabin Is Actually Made From

Timber-framed and EPS foam panel cabins can look similar from the outside but behave very differently in thermal mass, moisture management, repairability, and how they hold up over time. Ask specifically what the structure is made from, why the company builds that way, and how it performs in NZ conditions. A company that builds with conviction will have a clear answer. One that gets vague is telling you something.

2. What the Warranty Actually Covers

A warranty is only worth what the company behind it is worth. Ask for specifics: what's covered, for how long, and under what conditions. Ask how claims are handled and whether there are examples of the company honouring them. Vague warranty language or reluctance to answer direct questions about this is worth noting.

3. Whether the Build Meets NZ Building Code

NZ Building Code compliance isn't optional it applies regardless of whether a building consent is required. Ask whether the company builds to code as a standard and whether they can provide documentation. Some imported or budget products aren't designed with NZ compliance in mind. That liability transfers to you when you take ownership.

4. How Transparent the Pricing Is

Clear, itemised pricing that tells you what's in and what's out is a reasonable baseline expectation. If a quote is hard to interpret, exclusions are buried in fine print, or direct questions about costs get vague answers that pattern tends to continue through the project. How a company handles pricing conversations is a decent indicator of how they'll handle everything else.

5. How Long the Company Has Been Around

A business that's been operating for years, has completed hundreds of builds, and has a track record you can verify is a different proposition to a newer operator or a reseller. Cabins are long-term assets, and you want someone you can call if something needs attention in five years. Ask how long they've been in business, how many builds they've completed, and whether you can speak to previous customers.

Freedom Cabins has been building since 2019, with over 200 completed builds across New Zealand. We build timber-framed, we price transparently, and we're happy to answer questions other companies might dodge. If you'd like to compare us to your other options with full information, get in touch.
